Reactivation of production of PAN yarns

On March 15, 2021

The carbochain fibers (CCF) workshop of the pilot plant of JSC "VNIISV" is preparing to launch production of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) yarns after a long break. Currently the necessary equipment is being commissioned in phases. The recruitment has been carried out through the conclusion of fixed-term contracts.
PAN yarns with a nominal linear density of 33,3 tex are produced in the CCF workshop. These yarns are developed according to VNIISV’s own technology and are used as a raw material (precursor) for production of carbon tapes ELUR and LUP, as well as carbon tows VMN-4, which are a base feed stock for modern composite materials used in aircraft, space-rocket and defense industries.
For reference:
The CCF workshop was put into operation in 1966. Until the nineties of the 20th century it worked as a pilot production with a capacity of no more than 40 tpa to manufacture PAN yarns of 33,3 tex for the enterprises of aircraft and space-rocket industries. The current production capacity of PAN yarn of 33,3 tex is 140 tpa.
The technology of PAN yarn production was developed and introduced by scientists and designers of VNIISV, as well as the main processing equipment for synthesis, polymer dissolution, molding and thermal stabilization of a yarn, the system of control equipment.
The PAN yarn of fine denier is included in the CD (construction documentation), reported in the certificate and certified in special products of aircraft and space-rocket industries, especially for a long service life.

The Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council

On March 12, JSC "VNIISV" held a meeting of the scientific and technical council (STC). Under the chairmanship of the Deputy Director for Science, Professor Alexander Viktorovich Genis the meeting determined the work plan of the STC for the current year.
Also during the meeting there was heard the report of the Test Center Manager, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Associate Professor Tatyana Ivanovna Samsonova about the research conducted by the Test Center to identify additional factors that affect an improvement of physical and mechanical properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) yarns while maintaining the lowest values of coefficients of variation in strength and linear density of the yarns.
The STC participants showed keen interest, approved the results of the research, taking into account all the nuances of the technology for PAN yarns production, and noted that this report is quite topical at the present time.
For reference: JSC "VNIISV" is currently the only producer of PAN yarns of  fine denier (nominal density 33,3 tex), used as a basic raw material (precursor) for manufacture of carbon tapes ELUR and LUP, carbon bundles VMN-4 for the needs of aerospace industry and enterprises of the defense-industrial sector. The capacity of the VNIISV’s plant allows to produce 140 tpa of PAN yarns of 33,3 tex.

MEDIA about us

MOSCOW, January 15th, 2021 - RIA Novosti

"Rostec”: The polyethylene "Sotnik" will surpass any bulletproof vest in protection.

As a basis for equipment of the third generation "Sotnik” (that means “centurion”), which is planned to be created to replace the "Ratnik” (that means “warrior"), there is considered an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber "
"Thanks to the new materials, the set of equipment "Centurion" will get a record low weight and the ability to fit the anatomical features of the fighter.
As a result, the protection will not restrict movements and will allow the fighter to take an additional weight necessary to perform special missions. At the same time, the equipment will have increased protection in comparison with existing types of bulletproof vests," the State corporation said.
In the future, "Sotnik" will not only stop the shrapnel flying at a speed of up to  670 meters per second, but also extinguish the shock pulse, which can cause serious damage to internal organs even without breaking through the protection. "We expect to get such an effect through the use of special shock-absorbing means," the State corporation explained.
As the director of  Rostec’s weapons complex, Bekhan Ozdoev, told RIA Novosti in November last year: ”Sotnik will be lighter, more ergonomic, more reliable and more technologically advanced than “Ratnik”.

In January 2021 (No. 2 from 13.01.2021) the newspaper of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation "Red Star" published an article written by Director General of the Center "Armokom", chief designer of the security system of military combat equipment, honored scientist of the Russian Federation Eugene F. Kharchenko "The Armor will be lighter and stronger" about ultralight composite materials from ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber developed in our Institute.
Despite the unfavorable economic situation, Russian chemists from “VNIISV” (Tver) have created and continuously improve domestic ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers. Their specific strength reaches 350 cN/tex, that is almost 1,5 times higher than that of the best aramid fibers of "Kevlar" type (USA).
On the base of UHMWPE fibers, Russian specialists have made composite armor elements to protect the vital organs from hand-held firearms and the legs of military personnel from shrapnel. Unlike foreign technologies, these facilities of armor protection were first made by winding.
“Thus, in Russia there has appeared a new class of highly effective ballistic and structural composite material, which can be brought to practical use by advanced domestic enterprises and research teams charged with a wish of winning over foreign competitors."
